Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge remark that “leaders like Rahul Gandhi have laid their lives for the country” has given Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) perfect ammunition for trolling its rival.
At a rally in poll-bound Rajasthan on Monday, Kharge said leaders like Rahul Gandhi laid their lives for nation’s unity. Needless to say, he meant Rajiv Gandhi.
Someone promptly alerted Mallikarjun Kharge of the error, after which the Congress chief apologised and said, “I apologise. I mistakenly said Rahul Gandhi…Rajiv Gandhi gave his life for the nation’s unity. Congress has leaders who gave their life for the nation while the BJP has leaders who take lives.”
Not leaving the opportunity, BJP was quick to pick up the click and troll Congress with a post on X saying “ye kab hua [when did that happen].”
Another BJP functionary, Charu Pragya, wrote on X: “Rahul Gandhi sacrificed his life for the unity of this Nation.” — Congress President @kharge
Didn’t realise I missed such a big news!”
Similar tweets were put out by several other BJP leaders and netizens.
Kharge on Monday said that Congress leaders made sacrifices and fought for the country’s freedom and asked if any RSS or BJP had made any contribution to the struggle for independence. He said Congress leaders sacrifice their lives whereas BJP people “take away lives”.
“Who killed Mahatma Gandhi? And the people having the mentality of Nathuram Godse are in which party? he said. The Congress president said that BJP toppled elected governments in different states, including Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Manipur, Maharashtra.
